PMH staff completes drill Typical of rural communities, Preston County, West Virginia, is the kind of place where peo- ple help each other. In a disaster situation, a team effort is cru- cial. The Incident Command Staff at Preston Memorial recently tested out PMH's responsive- ness to a Bomb Threat or 'Code Black" tabletop drill, and for the first time, included new Editor's note: As the fall sports seasons get under- way, we offer this mes- sage from one of the PHS Athletic Directors. As the start of another inter- scholastic sports season gets underway, we would like to remind all those attending our local contest the importance of good sportsmanship, Regard- less of the sport, the excitement of competition stirs a ~variety of emotions in both partici- pants and spectators. A goal of each Preston High School team should be victory with good sportsmanship. PHS co- athletic director Mike Contic has previously written a very meaningful letter which warrants sharing, as another school year begins. Regardless of being an athlete, student, par- ent, or supporter of PHS activi- ties, let's all accept Coach Con- tic's challenge. "Integrity, fairness, and re- spect- these are the principles of good sportsmanship. With them the spirit of competition thrives, fueled by honest rivalry, courte- ous relations, and graceful ac- ceptance of the results. "Working to that end, we here at PHS hope you (players, par- ents, coaches, and fans) will join the administration and ath- letic directors as we promote good sportsmanship because it is an important component of the education of our students. Sure, our teams will play to win, but not all of them can. We simply have to accept it. Wins and losses are soon forgotten; integrity, fairness, and respect are not. "As we begin another sports year, we are asking everyone to have a role in promoting good sportsmanship at the interscho- lastic level. Specifically, our goals include: Promoting the ideals and fun- damentals of good sportsman- DEDICATED FLATBED RUNS NOW AVAILABLE • MUST five w~n 50 miles • radius of IGngwood $.38-.39/mile 0r $650 a week guaran~e • Average 1,500+milestweek average • Long weekends at home with some home time throughout the week • Excellent benefits & top of tile llne equipment • Class A CDL, 23 years old • & 6 months OTR experience req. 1-800-289-1100 www.drivemaverick.com members of the local commu- nity, Actively involved were members of the Preston County E-911 staff and the Kingwood Chief-of-Police. Preston Memorial Hospital had been using LiveProcess, a hospital web-based disaster management tool, for several months when Dr. Fred Conley, Threat Preparedness Director, chose to engage the disaster ship which includes acknowl- edging disrespectful behavior, such as taunting, trash talk and intimidation has no place in school athletics, Celebrating acts of sportsman- ship behavior and reporting acts of unsportsmanlike behavior to the attending administrator at a sporting event, Refraining from making nega- tive comments towards or about participants, coaches, or offi- cials. After all, the interscholas- tic athletic arena is a classroom. Would you make negative com- ments about teachers teaching students and students trying to learn? "If we maintain the justifica- tion for our programs, we must unite now to let our student body, student-athletes, specta- tors, and community know this and other forms of disrespectful behavior will not be tolerated in our athletic classrooms. In all sports, taunting, trash-talking, and intimidating behavior can be cause for a player or coach to be ejected from a contest, and miss additional competi- planning specialists at LivePro- cess in the actual planning and execution of the drill. Dr. Con- ley knew this exercise needed to be focused on community coor- dination. "We had been part of a regional drill in the fall that had been successful at a hospi- tal level. However, in regards to other county teams, such as lo- cal law enforcement, we didn't know their policies thoroughly, and they didn't know ours." "Our Incident Command Team really impressed me," recalled Dr. Conley about the drill. "They dug in, used the technol- ogy easily and efficiently, and were very good at staying one step ahead of the information, resource requests, and tasks we were throwing at them." They did so well that LiveProcess complemented them on their performance and has written a case study highlighting PMH as a hospital using a "Best Prac- tice" that will be shared with multiple hospitals nationwide. The ability to keep accurate records of supplies going in and out of the hospital was par- ticularly impressive to Preston Memorial's CFO, Bob Milvet. Hospitals are put under enor- mous pressure and financial strain when it comes to manag- ing disasters, and this kind of tool is invaluable in attempting to recoup those costs. Other points Dr. Conley high- lighted when comparing ex- ercises before and after using LiveProcess, include: • No more "call-down tree." "We will never use it again," said Dr. Conley, who now noti- fies teams via his LiveProcess dashboard. • Everyone can get involved. Each of Preston Memorial's employees has his/her own user name and password for the LiveProcess system. In conclusion, let us be mind- ful sportsmanship is pride in our school, our team, and ourselves. Sportsmanship is respect for the game and for those who play it. One of the most useful aspects of utilizing LiveProcess was being able to record and keep conversations, fulfillments, and inventory on the platform, and save it for fu- ture analysis. "By looking at our conversa- tions, we realized we should have been calling the Preston County EOC more for assis- tance with problems that we were trying to solve ourselves. That was a key learning point for us." PMH's Threat Preparedness committee is already working on an exercise for next April that will encompass hospitals and resources in a 14-county Homeland Security area of northern WV. Plans are to partner with the American Red Cross, the Pres- ton 'County Disaster Animal Response Team, the Preston County Health Department, local Fire, EMS, and Law En- forcement, and officials and Wednesday, August 24, 2011- WV- PRESTON COUNTY JOURNAL- 7 hospitals from across the region to conduct a two-day, two-event scenario involving a major flood and a dirty bomb explosion. Dr. Conley summed up disaster preparedness as follows: "Most people don't really know what you do until disaster strikes. In a community where you know the names of all the kids on the street, you feel a responsibility toward them, toward everyone. Our Threat Preparedness team at Preston Memorial is training to make sure we are at our best in case we are needed."
