Author returning to Rowlesburg
submitted by Tim Weaver
Fran Cannon Slayton--Law-
yer, Prosecutor, author of When
The Whistle Blows--returns to
Rowlesburg for the Labor Day
Weekend Festival. She will be
the guest speaker at the opening
of Railroad Day on Saturday
September 3. The opening is at
11 am at the Rowlesburg Ambu-
lance Building. She will be talk-
ing to readers and signing books
again on Sunday and Monday
at the Szilagyi Center and the
Rowlesburg Community Park.
Slayton spent her childhood
growing up in Manassas and
Haymarket, Virginia. She was
a mean unicycle rider and pogo
stick hopper, and prided herself
as an all-around terror on the
kickball field. Other favorite
pastimes included exploding
caps (with or without the use
of a magnifying glass), catch-
ing salamanders with her bare
hands, and using them as bait
when she went fishing. Her
parents, Jim and Betty DeWitt
Cannon, grew up in Rowles-
burg. She spent many summer
and winter vacations with them
visiting their extended families
in the area.
In high school she played first
trumpet in the Bishop Ireton
-Saint Mary's Academy Sym-
phonic Wind Ensemble, and
lettered in four varsity sports
(soccer, basketball, softball and
field hockey). In college she
went to the Junior Olympics in
fencing, played in the Award
Winning Virginia Fighting Cav-
alier Indoor/Outdoor Precision
Marching Pep Band and Chow-
der Society Review Unlimited
and graduated Phi Beta Kappa
from the University of Virginia
Class of 1989 with a double dis-
tinguished major in Psychology
and Religious Studies.
After getting married to her
college sweetheart and work-
ing on Capitol Hill for a couple
of years, she went back to the
University of Virginia's Law
School where she set a personal
record by playing on six differ-
ent softball teams in one single
semester. After law school Fran
became a prosecutor, specializ-
ing in child sex abuse cases, and
then went on to become a legal
publisher and mild-mannered
title insurance agency owner.
When her daughter was born,
Fran became a stay-at-home
mom ("the best job ever," she
said), author, and part-time
singer/trumpet player tn a rock
and roll cover band.

Appalachian Wood Pellets will
buy sawdust to make pellets
from Allegheny Wood Prod-
ucts. Conveyor belts will carry
it from the mill to the plant,
Reckart said.
Later, if it's feasible, sawdust
might be trucked in from Al-
legheny Wood Products' other
mills. But for now, those opera-
tions will continue doing with
their sawdust what they have
done in the past.
The sawdust was not going to
waste before: this is just a new
use for it.
"We burn a lot of our sawdust
at the other facilities to produce
heat for our dry kilns so we
don't have to use natural gas to
fire them," Reckart said, adding
that some of the sawdust is sold
to the Kingsford Co. to make
charcoal.
Reckart said Don Wagner,
who is helping build the plant,
has a background in the pellet
industry. Once it goes online, he
will run it and take the product
to market through distributors.

Founded in 1973, Allegheny
Wood Products Inc. is a family-
owned company. The Peters-
burg-headquartered hardwood
lumber producer operates mills
in Preston, Randolph, Pendle-
ton and Mercer counties in West
Virginia and in Clarion County,
Pa. Kingwood is its largest fa-
cility, Reckart said, and that's
why Allegheny chose to locate
the pellet plant there.

When the Whistle Blows (for-
merly titled How To Stop a
Moving Train), was published
by Philomel Books/Penguin on
June 11, 2009. Here were some
of the preliminary reviews:
"With wit and warmth Fran-
Cannon Slayton recounts a
steam-driven coming of age
story in the last of thereal rail-
road days."--Richard Peck
"From its whip-smart open-
ing to its look at the complex-
ity of father/son relationships
Slayton's loving novel takes a
long hard look at the death of
people and that intangible idea
of 'home'. Slayton g!Ves voice
to the abiding love and frustra-
tion of father/son relationships
in a book far better than your
average coming-?f-age novel.
'When the Whistle Blows'
stopped me in my tracks." --
Elizabeth Bird
When the Whistle Blows is
reminiscent of classic tales by
Jack London, William Golding
and Robert Louis Stevenson,
yet carries the remarkable, fresh
voice of its author. Fran Cannon
Slayton should be extremely
proud of this, her debut novel.
-- Ellen Hopkins,Bestselling au-
thor of Crank.
The reviews have only gotten
better since. The book now is
out in paperback. Slayton will
have books available for sale
(proceeds go the Rowlesburg
Volunteer Ambulance Service,

Community Park).
