MacDonald, noted Chest- ing in the Chestnut World of Professor Charles and Alice nut researchers, Displays by the Row!esburg Middle School, Throwing Chestnuts-in-the- Well Contest with prizes for children, Live Music, Food and Bex;erages. Vendors will include: Jarred Honey with Chestnuts by The Bee Box, Chestnut Furniture and smaller items, Chestnut Collectibles by Allegheny Tre- enware, Chestnut Tree Saplings for sale (Asian and others). Other Vendors: Across the street from the Park, in The Szilagyi Creative Arts Center, the River City Caf6 will be open includ- ing serving delicious desserts. Other activities taking place there from Noon to 5 p.m. in-' clude: West Virginia's premier World War II Museum, B & O Museum Centenary Bridge Exhibit, on loan from the Bal- timore Museum, The new Pres- ton County Sports Museum, Exhibit by The Preston County Arts Council, including mul-" tiple pottery items, The Quilt Room exhibit and quilts for sale, The River City Emporium and Collectibles with items for sale. An exciting Scientific Pro- gram is planned for those want- ing to explore what is happen- Research. For the first time, we will host The West Virginia ChapterMeeting of TACF, pre- sided over by Chapter President Jimmy Jenkins, from I-3 p.m. in the Szilagyi Center and the pubijcis invited. Additionally, from 4-5 p.m., WVU professor, Mark Double and Dr. N. Joseph Nassif, will host a Chestnut Scientific program with two prominent speakers: Dr. Don Kines, "Chestnut Breeding and Grafting Programs in Barbour County Orchards," and Bry- an Burhans, CEO and Presi- dent, The American Chestnut Foundation, "Science Behind American and Asian Chestnut Breeding Programs in 16 State Chapters of TACF." Time per- mitting, Thomas Harttung Nas- sir, PhD Candidate, will pres- ent, "A Chestnut Documentary DVD". A big hit has always been the Gala Chestnut Banquet from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Auditorium of the Szilagyi Center, with the dinner menu including a variety of savory Chestnut Flavored dishes. We will pay special honor to the 4th annual crowning of this year's Mr. and Mrs. Chestnut WANTED Expenenced Automotive Technician new car Chrysler prefered but not required Chestnut Festival will take place on Sunday, October 9, 2011 from 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. in Rowlesburg. Once again, this year's theme will be honoring the past heri- tage and present research steps taken to further the rebirth of The Great American Chestnut Tree in the Appalachian wood- lands. You will not want to miss the variety of activities packed into one day in the convenient Rowlesburg Park location and The Szilagyi Creative Arts Cen- ter across the street. Activities are planned for all ages and all types of .interest, whether it be sampling roasted chestnuts, browsing varied Chestnut vendors selling their wares, purchasing Chestnut sap- lings, attending scientific lec- tures, attending a Gala Chestnut Banquet and much more. The day begins with a Con- tinental Breakfast from 10;30 a.m. to noon in the River City Cafr', located in the Szilagyi Creative Arts Center. The Rowlesburg Park Activi- ties, from noon to 5 p.m. will include: Sampling of Grilled Roasted Chestnuts, Chestnuts to-go, raw or grilled, Dem- onstration of a new Chestnut Peeling Machine, invented by Gerald Whitmer. Shirley Cook Hartley, Co- Chairperson, will give a toast, The Chestnut-Vino Novello Ritual, "Welcoming the Chest- nut Harvest and the Tasting of the New Wine." The ritual is an annual celebration of Thanks in Tuscany and other Northern Regions of Italy that harvest chestnuts. Dr. N. Joseph Nassif, Festival Director, will introduce our dis- tinguished guests, including our keynote speaker, Dr. James Hill Craddock, Biology Professor at the University of Tennessee. Dr. Craddock, one of the Nation's leading Chestnut Research Sci- entists, will update us on, "Ac- tivities in Restoring The Ameri- can Chestnut Tree to its Native Range within the Woodlands of Tennessee."
