4- PRESTON COUNTY JOURNAL- Wednesday, October 12, 2011- Kingwood, WV KNI Football From the first kick off, when Lewis County ran the ball back for a touchdown within 16 sec- onds, an uphill challenge began for the Knights. The final score was the Minutemen 46 Preston High 7. The Knights had seven turn- overs, includjng five fumbles and two interceptions, which greatly contributed to the loss. A bright spot in the PHS offense was when quarterback Caleb Atkinson hit Nash Thomas (also crowned Lord Preston at the half-time Homecoming fes- tivities) on a 50 yard touchdown catch. Atkinson finished the game with 63 yards passing and 15 yards rushing, along with Bryson Bishop adding another 25 yards, and 22 yards rushing. Cory Goldstrom had a good running game with 92 yards on 19 carries. Chad Vandevender added 48 yards rushing on 3 at- tempts. Ivo Cabral kicked the extra point for the 1-5 Knights. Girls Soccer The girls soccer team im- proved their record to 9-3 with a 7-0 victory at South Hard- son last Tuesday. Junior goalie Aubrey Hall set a PHS record with her 15th career shutout in addition, to three saves. A strong defensive performance was given by Rebecca Myers, Kylen Reckart, and McKenna Warnick. Lindsey Garbart led the offensive attack by regis- tering three goals, while earn- ing her second hat trick of the season. Contributing individual scores were Whitney Workman, Cassie Listen, Kaitlyn Work- man, and Madison Goff. The Workman sisters (Whitney and Kaitlyn) also made two assists in this contest. The Lady Knights played to a 0-0 deadlock, in double over- time (Maryland regulations) against Northern of Garrett County (Md.) last Thursday evening. In over 100 minutes of play, neither team could score. Coach Bruce Workman described the contest as a "hard playing and fast moving game, one to watch for the defensive lovers of the game." Goalie Aubrey Hall made 14 saves. A strong team defensive effort was made, especially by Rebcca Myers, Kyleen Reckart, McK- enna Warnick, Katey Shatter, Chelsie Barker, Whitney and Kaitlyn Workman. The teams record is now 9-3-1. The Lady Applemen from Musselman High School vis- ited PHS last Saturday. The Lady Knights controlled the entire contest in registering a 4-0 win. The victory improved their record to 10-3-1. Senior Rebecca Myers led a strong de- fense by allowing Musselman only four goal attempts for the day. Junior Goalie Aubrey Hall earned her 8th shut-out on the season and the 17th of her outstanding career. Whitney and Kaitlyn Workman provided timely assists. Boys Soccer The boys soccer team defeated South Harrison 5-1 last Tues- day evening. The victory was led by Ivo Cabral's two goals as the Knights record is now 10-5. Other goals were contributed by Travis Patak, Brandon Jackson, and Sigurd Lekve. Last Thursday evening at the Knights Stadium, the PHS boys defeated Morgantown High 2-1 in a hard fought contest. The Knights relied on a strong team defense. Ivo Cabral provided the scoring for Pston High. Volleyball Coach Sue Sanders reported the Preston High volleyball girls participated last week in the Southern High School (Maryland) Pink-Out for Can- cer Awareness. Proceeds were donated to "Cindy's Fund," a fund raising group which helps local cancer patient needs. Last Wednesday night at the Knights Castle, the volleyball team defeated Clay-Battelle 3-0. Belle Pysell led the way with 13 serves, one ace and 33 sets. Becca Hagedorn contribut- ed 11 serves, two were aces, 20 hits and three were kills• Laken Jones had eight serves, two were aces, 10 hits, and three were kills. Tana Hershman add- ed eight serves, three were aces, 12 hits, and one kill. Tori Fan- ning had three serves, one ace and seven hits. Mattie Parson contributed five hits and one kill. Preston won the first set 25-22, the second set 25-23 and the final set 25-16. Coach Sue Sanders was especially pleased with the squads offensive play, and the manner in which her team picked up the tempo after falling behind in the second set. PHS record improved to 4-6 on the season. Cross Country The Preston High School Girls Cross Country team scored 47 points to win the Fairmont Times Invitational* last Satur- day against a field of 16 teams• In a time of 20:20, Kaitlyn Workman was the first runner to cross the finish line. Whitney Workman finished fourth with a time of 21:20, and teammate Rachel Hulett placed fifth with a time of 21:22. Additional Lady Knghts placement were: Megan Stemple (22:52) in 17th place, Kirsten Born (23:04) in 20th place, Kristin Lantz (23:58) finished 27th and Megan Pritt (26:35) placed 55th. The Boys Cross Country team finished 3rd overall last Sat- urday in the Gettysburg (PA) Cannon Clash Invitational from a field of 40 schools• Pe- ter Schwarzenberg continued his record setting ways as the individual champion. Peter's time was 15:48 in establishing a new course record. Brody Born placed 8th overall and Colin Radabaugh finished 34th. Also running for the Knights were Nick Robertson, Tim Funk, Trever Jennings, and Kyle Ben- son. Due to scheduling con- flicts* with Horhecoming and a soccer game, Karli Ridenour was the only female athlete competing for the Knights. Ridenour finished 35th overall with a time of 20:27. Junior Varsity The PHS J-V football team defeated Tucker County 36-0. Scoring touchdowns for the JV Knights were: Paul Barlow, Mitchell Thrift, Wyatt Smith, Bryce Nolan, and Josiah Nuse. The girls volleyball topped Clay-Battelle 25-9 and 25-10. Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Nicole Yocum with 13 serves, 7 aces, Kayla Commodore contributing 13 serves with 5 aces, and Ashley Ball adding 3 hits and 1 kill. In girls soccer, Chelsea Gib- son with a time of 25:30 won the Fairmont Times Invitational cross country race last Satur- day in Fairmont. Shelbie Shultz (26:23) finished in 3rd place and Tori Lilly (29:29) placed 8th.
